After traces of horse DNA were detected in various meat products in 2013, a method for the determination of horse DNA in cattle meat was published by the European Union Reference Laboratory for Animal Proteins in animal feed (EURL-AP).

The method "Detection of horse DNA using real-time PCR" is described in the EURL-AP recommended protocol on http://eurl.craw.eu/en/164/legal-sources-and-sops and was adapted for use in our laboratories. With real-time PCR and a 1% (w/w) horse in cattle meat mixture, Eurofins laboratories are able to determine if horse DNA is present at a threshold of 1%.
